Hi, I have a 8y.o. son who was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 5. He has been in therapy since. However this is something that we have had to pay for and is very expensive. Problem is he is not far enough behind to have an IEP( thanks to therapy) and is not getting the appropriate help in school. We are in the Fayette County. There seems to be nothing for dyslexic children in this area without having to pay an arm and a leg. He is getting very frustrated and so I am. Any suggestions? We do have an initial 504 meeting next week.

You might contact Donna
You might contact Donna Gatewood at the Parent Resource Center in Fayette County. She helps families learn how to navigate the system and might be able to connect you with other parents that are having similar concerns. I think her office is at Tates Creek Elementary School, but I'm not sure. Sorry for the delay in answering.
dyslexia help
I suspect (know) my 8 year old son is dyslexic but need advice regarding who to go to for an evaluation. We are already using the RAD Prism glasses from Dyslexia Solutions in Louisville and they are incredible!!!!!!! They really work and I do recommend them. He is now reading at grade level but is still having difficulty with writing and spelling. I was hoping to get a 504 plan so he could have accommodations in his class next year but when I talked with a school psychologist at my school, just to get some information on how to proceed, she really disappointed me. She said that the diagnosis of dyslexia was very controversial and that many people didn't really think it existed. Can the public school systems in KY diagnose dyslexia or should I just find a private person to evaluate? As of right now, I'm really not wanting to go through the public school system but do not know who to go to for the evaluation. We live in Fayette County and I would like to find someone local but am not opposed to going to Louisville or wherever I need to. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Creating a 504 plan is a
Creating a 504 plan is a good way to go. To have a 504 plan all you have to do is have a disability that effects your life functioning. You should be able to request accommodations and modifications for him on the 504 plan (similar to an IEP). Hope it all goes well. Good luck.
